Devon Branch

Sad Losses

Here we record sad losses to our branch.

Eric Chapman, our former Musical Director

Eric died peacefully on June 10th 2006..

Eric's recorder playing goes back over 40 years, when he attended classes with Walter Bergmann. He was also a keyboard player and bassoonist, and in his later years he was much in demand as a piano tuner.

Eric was acting as Musical Director even before his move to Devon in 1981, and he retired from the post in 2001. He was a driving force in the branch, conducting most of our meetings, and introducing us to a wide range of music. He also acted as a visiting conductor to other branches where he was highly regarded.

Always a generous and kind man, Eric freely shared his skills and extensive knowledge. He was an excellent playing companion and friend to many, who will greatly miss him.

Joan Hooppell

Joan died at home on 11th March 2007.

Joan was involved with setting up three SRP groups. She played in many different groups around the Country during her 60+ years of playing and encouraged many people to play, especially youngsters who were just starting out.

There was always a warm welcome at her home for the many playing days she hosted. She was a great cook and established a reputation for providing wonderful food for everyone.

In her earlier years she was a teacher, counsellor and musician alongside bringing up her own three children. When working in education with students with special needs, Joan worked tirelessly to give them the greatest opportunities and widest experiences possible.

Joan had a long association with Devon Branch, and her mince pies at our Christmas meetings are a matter of legend.

Her family have asked not to be sent cards, messages of condolence or flowers, and there will be a private cremation, Joan's express wish.
