We are delighted to announce Jonathan Dove as the new Honorary President of the Society of Recorder Players.
Following the death of the Society’s previous President, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, it is fitting that the role has again been filled by one of Britain’s most prestigious composers. Renowned as one of the world’s foremost contemporary opera composers, Jonathan has also been committed to community music projects throughout his career. Most recently, his community opera The Monster in the Maze was performed in London, Aix-en-Provence and Berlin under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle.
Members were excited to learn that Jonathan was able to find time in his busy schedule for a visit to the Society’s 80th Anniversary Festival in Cambridge on Sunday. He addressed the Society before the final playing session of the weekend and spoke about his early encounters with the recorder and some of his compositions which feature the instrument, in particular The Pied Piper, a piece for narrator, clarinet and massed recorders! The Society is grateful to Jonathan for agreeing to take on this role and we look forward to continuing to build links with him in the future.
