The Gremlins Recorder group and the CatStrand jointly present a day with Ensemble Hesperi. Morning playing for recorder players, 11am - 1pm: Explore the charming music of the Scottish Baroque composer James Oswald and his friends with virtuoso recorder player Mary-Jannet Leith, Afternoon playing for all early instruments including recorders, 2pm - 4pm: Join Thomas Allery (harpsichord), Magdalena Loth-Hill (Baroque Violin) and Florence Petit (Baroque Cello) to celebrate the music of Handel and some grounds by his English colleagues in the early eighteenth century. Evening concert, 7pm: Ensemble Hesperi presents a programme of music from their debut CD “Full of the Highland Humours”, taken from the title of the very first collection of Scots tunes, published in London in 1700. They showcase music by expat Scottish composers who lived or thrived in the capital, including the Earl of Kelly and James Oswald, alongside sparkling trio sonatas by Giuseppe Sammartini and Francesco Geminiani. A light lunch at the CatStrand is included for those coming to both playing sessions. Evening meals can be found in New Galloway, in Dalry (5 minutes away) or in Castle Douglas (20 minutes away). There are buses to New Galloway from both Ayr and Dumfries and Galloway Community Transport can run transport back after the event or on Sunday morning.
