Individuals join the Society either directly or through one of its branches. Organisations such as recorder orchestras may affiliate to the Society directly, and we are also supported by commercial organisations joining as corporate members.

Branches are largely self governing and have their own committees, while the Society as a whole is run by by a voluntary committee of Trustees elected by members.

In 2011/12 the Society undertook a study into how it should serve its members and the wider community and support the continuation and development of recorder playing in the UK up to 2020.

For its 75th Anniversary in 2012, Bob Whitmarsh compiled a history of the early years of the Society. We also have obituaries commemorating prominent members of the recorder community from Carl Dolmetsch on.
