Staeps and Derek
Hans Ulrich Staeps (1909–1988) was born in Dortmund and was a professor at the Vienna Conservatory from 1940-1975. He tutored on various courses in Europe and the USA, including the Northern Recorder Course, which is where Derek met him.

He and Derek shared the train journey back down south, after the course, and Derek was as impressed by the man as he had been by his music.

I had not heard of Staeps until I moved to Cheltenham in 1998 and started to play
with Derek & Tessa who introduced me to the Saratoga Suite, the Flute Dances and the Choric Quintet and inspired me to discover the rest of his significant and varied output.

When I decided that I wanted to dedicate my next ‘Pop-up’ day to Derek, music by HU Staeps was therefore the obvious choice.
