The Society of Recorder Players

Edinburgh Branch

Branch Secretary: E.Finlayson edinburgh@srp.org.uk

The 2009-2010 season started on Monday 21st of September. We meet weekly with a conductor from September to June on Monday evenings, 7.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. in Augustine United Church, 41-43 George IV Bridge, Edinburgh EH1 1EL and also occasionally for a special event on Saturday afternoon, including a "Playing Day" with a visiting conductor from the national Society. Visitors from other branches are welcome, and prospective new members can try us out for a few meetings before committing themselves to join.
The season has started with Andrew Short and Peter Wraith conducting. We have started the process of recruiting a main conductor to replace Fabian Setznagel, who has left after conducting the branch for three years.
Please bring your instruments and a music stand.

Each season we have a Saturday meeting with a visiting conductor from the national SRP. On Saturday 27 March 2010 this will be Steve Marshall from Gloucestershire, a prolific composer and arranger of music for recorders.

The Branch will organise the annual Scottish Recorder Festival to take place in Mayfield Salisbury Church on Saturday 22 May 2010 with principal guest conductor Marion Doherty and other conductors, also shops. On Sunday 23 May there will be a conducting workshop led by Marion.

One-to-a-part playing is also encouraged.  One-to-a-part groups meet separately, usually in each others' homes. They are invited to perform to the branch, family and friends at the Christmas evening and Summer evening.

Music is normally provided for playing at meetings, and can only be borrowed if signed for in the book. There is a large amount of music suitable for borrowing by individuals and small groups. Enquiries should be addressed to the Librarian.

Tea Rota. A member is required each week to make the tea and coffee and clear away. Please see the list in the church hall, and make changes if the dates allocated do not suit you. Tea/coffee and biscuits cost 50p.

Scottish Recorder Orchestra. This orchestra affiliated to the SRP rehearses monthly in Stirling and gives public performances. It also has residential weekends and collaborates with the Dortmund Recorder Consort.
