March 2026

Fri 13 - Sun 15Mar2026

Enjoy beautiful music and develop your skills in the company of players of a similar standard, at a beautiful location set within the heart of the Lake District.

Rydal Hall, Ambleside, Cumbria, LA22 9LX

£340 (residential) £230 (non-residential)

Foundation Course: 4pm Fri 13th - 3pm Sun 15th March 2026

Tutored by Mary Tyers, the overall objective of Recorders at Rydal is to have fun exploring a variety of music in a friendly, lively, enjoyably challenging yet supportive atmosphere.

Mary delights in enabling enthusiastic adult amateurs to enjoy and develop their music making. Technique, style & interpretation will be covered as they arise.

This foundation course is suitable for players who are able to read straightforward music at sight and have a reasonable grounding in recorder playing (one and a half octaves, to two sharps & flats). You don’t have to be able to play both F & C instruments or be an experienced consort player; the willingness to ‘give things a go’ and have fun making music are the essential ingredients!

Please book direct with Rydal Hall, but feel free to contact Mary if you have other queries regarding the course.

Residential and day visitor rates available. Non-playing partners and friends also welcome.

See you there!

The function of trills will be examined in different contexts within various pieces of music looking at rhythm, harmony and melody. The modern myth of trills always starting on the note above the written note in baroque music will be examined, with reasons why you can choose to start a trill on the written note instead.
