Fanny Power Thurlough O Carolan was born in County Meath in 1670. The son of a blacksmith, at the age of 18 a smallpox attack caused hm to lose his eyesight, so he was apprenticed to a harper. Aged 21 a benefactor provided him with a horse and a guide so he began his travels throughout Ireland, composing songs and harp tunes for his patrons, one of whom was presumably called Fanny Power.
